Service FAQs

Your car comes with lots of parts that spur all types of questions for Walled Lake, West Bloomfield, and Farmington Hills, Michigan, car owners. LaFontaine Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Walled Lake will answer some of these most frequently asked questions right here.

When to Change Oil?

You know that you need to change the oil in your car—but how often must it be done? Go by the mileage and consult your owner’s manual, as cars differ in when they should get oil changes.

At one time, your mechanic or the car manufacturer would have suggested an oil change every 3,000 miles. However, now you won’t need it to be done as often.

Depending on whether your car uses synthetic oil and a whole host of other factors, your car could hold out until 10,000 miles—or even 15,000 miles. However, many car makers cite 6,000 miles as a good rule of thumb.

How to Change Windshield Wipers

Some drivers may prefer to have their car’s windshield wipers changed by a service technician at our dealership. However, you can do it yourself. We can supply the new wipers, while you supply the elbow grease.

Before you take the rubber out of the wipers, make sure you know how large a wiper you need. Be sure to measure both the left and the right wipers, as they can differ in length.

Once you have the correct wipers, pull out the wiper arm and remove the old rubber. Then, slide on the new rubber. Repeat on the other side. Now, you’re ready for a driving rain.

Common Transmission Problems

Various signs point toward transmission problems, which can affect your vehicle’s performance. Your car may not even move, if it’s experiencing transmission issues.

For example, if your car will not stay in gear, the transmission could be harboring a leak. By performing a simple test, you can detect a potential leak.

Slide a piece of cardboard under your car when it’s in the driveway or in a parking space. Retrieve it after a few minutes. If you see a pink or a reddish stain marring the cardboard, it does indeed have a leak. The liquid may also smell sickly sweet.

Schedule an appointment with our service department online, so that our techs can patch up that leak.

How Long Do Tires Last?

You’ve been driving for so long on the set of tires your car is wearing that you may forget that they won’t last forever. There is a shelf life for tires, especially if you’re pounding the pavement.

After six years of use, tires will most likely need to be replaced. If you find that the tires are providing a wobbly ride, you may need to change them. This also indicates that you have not been rotating the tires often enough.

Checking the treads can help you identify if you need new tires as well. By inserting a penny into a tread, with Mr. Lincoln’s head facing down, you’ll be able to tell right away. If the top of Abe Lincoln’s head is visible, update your tires with a new set.
